a. D. Anger's information states that it has an incomplete listing of the children of Isaac Merritt and Jane Sternberg.
b. ISAAC MERRITT: b. ca. 1773/74 at Fishkill; Dutchess Co., NY; came with his father Joseph to the Niagara District in 1792 to clear land and plant grain (MS, p.18); migrated with his family from Fishkill to Caistor Twp. in June of 1793; petitioned for land as a resident of Caistor in 1797 (M7/10), however the petition itself is missing. On May 8, 1800 he purchased 100 acres in Lot 13 and 100 acres in Lot 14, Con 8, Grimsby Twp. from David Cargill, the Crown Patent holder (#161). Seven years later, on 9 March 1807 he sold the above 200 acres to Robert Hamilton.(#1209), and the following day on 10 March 1807 purchased 200 acres from Robert Hamilton in Lot 10 Con 11 Townsend Twp., Norfolk Co. This was followed in 1811 with a grant in Lot 2 Con 3 Windham Twp., Norfolk Co.
c.Isaac took part in the War of 1812 as a Private in Capt. Henry Medcalf's Co., 2nd Regt. Of Norfolk Militia.
d. In 1814, as the war closed, Isaac's first wife died and in 1816 he remarried 2nd to Susannah Beemer, widow of Uriah Pettit (d. 1 Jan. 1813), and daughter of Philip Beemer. Together they had another seven children.
e. Isaac's Will was written 16 Feb. 1849 and he died 27 Feb. 1855. The Will was probated 14 Aug. 1855 (Bk.L. No.11, Town.) The validity of the Will was contested in 'Beemer Vs. Merritt' due to the alleging that Isaac was not 'of sound mind' during the writing of the Will. ..."
