a. Joseph Merritt Jr.: born c. 1789 at Fishkill, Dutchess County, NY; War of 1812: Private 2nd Flank Co., 4th Lincoln Regt. Joseph of Grimsby petitioned for land in 1819 (M12/360) and on 17 Nov. 1819 was granted land, specifics not given in the Land Record Index. On 8 May 1821, Joseph of Grimsby was granted Lot E ½ of 26, Con. 10, Erin Twp. as a military claimant; age 39 on 29 Nov 1829 4th Lincoln Regt. Militia Rolls; age 42 on Nov. 1831 4th Lincoln Militia Rolls, 2nd Battalion; lived on Lots 7 and 8, Con 9, Grimsby Twp.; ( 61/1851 Gr.), and died in 1853.
b. "Mother says that her uncle Joseph Merritt was going to be married to a sister of her Uncle Daniel's wife (a Culver by name who was brought up down to the 12 mile Creek) but she had the consumption and died with her hand in Uncle Joseph's hand.
