Emigrated from Amsterdam about 1835 to Charleston, South Carolina. Worked first with a railroad company as a supervisor looking after trains that went inland. He was later given an office job by a Mr. King.
Started an import-export business (cotton & cheese) with his cousin Theodore Schermer (1805-1871) in Holland. Theodore was a member of the Haantjes & Schermer firm founded in 1770 (cheese merchants and ship owners), and became quite wealthy.
Purchased ($850) a house 7 Jan 1847 in Charleston Neck at #53 on the east side of St. Philip Street. He died of yellow fever in 1853.
