Delivered by Rev. N.W. Everett at the bi-centennial celebration of the settlement of Rochester, Mass., 22 Jul. 1879, published in the "New Bedford Mercury".
Samuel Briggs, with 28 others were original purchasers of the territory from the Indians, 22 Jul 1679.
Samuel Briggs, Jr, was of the "Revolutionary Committee", appointed 28 Dec 1772.
Nathaniel Briggs, was of the Commission appointed Mar. 1775, "to see that the minute men equip themselves."
In the company of "minute men" that responded to the first call 19 Apl. 1775, are found the names of Corporal Elisha Briggs, and Private John Briggs.
In the second company that responded to the "Lexington alarm" are Lieut. Nathaniel Briggs, Serg't John Briggs, and privates ______ Briggs and Elisha Briggs.
In the town of Wareham, Benjamin Briggs was one of a committee appointed 18 Jan. 1773, "to consider the grievances the Provinces are under."
