    "Na de lagere school ging Berend naar de Ambachtsschool waar hij zich liet vormen tot een goed vakman en waardoor hij zich geleidelijk aan heeft kunnen opwerken tot een voorman in de bouw. Berend was iemand van recht-door-zee! Op de man af en geen omwegen, maar zijn ja was ja! Hij mocht graag iets doen voor een ander.


    Zo nam hij twee jongens op in zijn gezin, Gert en Wil, die hij beschouwde als zijn eigen kinderen. Hun kinderen beschouwde hij als zijn kleinkinderen en hij was er maar wat trots op.


    In het parochieleven was hij ook heel erg actief getuige zijn vele functies als collectant, lid van de parochievergadering, PCI en IPC. Als bestuurslid van de begrafenisvereniging kwam onder zijn bezieling een aula tot stand en de zorg voor een weloverwogen kerkhof was bij hem in goede handen. Het mede-organiseren van zieken-en ouderen dagen, het jaarlijks mede-opzetten van de kerststal... vele van die kleine activiteiten, vaak niet opvallend werden met liefde en toewijding gedaan. het mooie bij hem was dat hij het altijd met plezier dee. "
