      Als Angehörige des Baugewerbes waren Maurer dem Zunftzwang unterworfen, der sich in deutschen Städten im 11. und 12. Jahrhundert herausgebildet hatte. Die Zünfte fungierten als Aufsichtsorgane, die Preise, Mitgliederzahlen, Arbeitsstunden und Löhne festsetzten, bis sie in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts abgeschafft wurden. Der Mann, der in dieser Szene Ziegel legt, muss ein Maurermeister gewesen sein. Lehrlinge begannen gewöhnlich mit 14 Jahren und arbeiteten sich nach vier oder mehr Jahren Ausbildung zur Stellung eines Gesellen hoch. Der Geselle, normalerweise des Lesens und Schreibens mächtig und bewandert im Zunftwesen und der Gemeindepolitik,arbeitete dann auf den Aufstieg zum Meister hin, um heiraten, eine Familie gründen und in die ehrwürdigen Reihen der Zunftmeister eintreten zu können.
