    De volkstelling van 1880 bevat records van families die in de Verenigde Staten en haar territoria leefden gedurende het laatste deel van de Grote Trek naar het Westen. Achtendertig staten waren betrokken bij de telling van 1880, plus de gebieden Arizona, Dakota, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Washington en Wyoming.     Volkstellers moesten informatie vastleggen over elke persoon die in het huishouden aanwezig was op de dag van de telling. Een volksteller kon een huis wellicht op een latere datum hebben bezocht, maar de informatie die werd verzameld werd geacht te gaan over de personen die op de dag van de telling in het huis aanwezig waren. De basis voor de volkstelling was de county. Elke county was verdeeld in tellingsdistricten, één voor elke volksteller. De ingevulde formulieren werden verzonden naar het Commerce Department’s Census Office in Washington, D.C.

    Federale Volkstellingen waren meestal betrouwbaar, gebaseerd op de kennis van de informant en de zorg van de volksteller. De informatie kan aan een volksteller zijn verstrekt door een willekeurig gezinslid of door een buurman. Sommige informatie kan niet correct geweest zijn of met opzet vervalst.
