De charmante en vrolijke, maar ook impulsieve prins brengt zijn jeugd door op het landgoed Reckenwalde (Woynowo) bij de Poolse grens. In 1935 behaalt hij zijn doctoraal examen Rechten. In zijn studententijd zet hij meermalen de bloemetjes buiten. Na 1935 werkt hij in Parijs bij het Duitse chemische concern IG Farben. Na de Duitse inval reist hij (na enig verzet van zijn kant) met koningin Wilhelmina naar Engeland, waar hij vrijwel de gehele oorlogsperiode blijft, terwijl zijn gezin naar Canada verhuisd. In Engeland maakt de prins een militaire carriere en verwerft als opperbevelhebber van de Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten algemene waardering. In zijn tegenwoordigheid vindt in 1945 de onvoorwaardelijke Duitse overgave plaats van de vesting Holland. Na de oorlog wordt hij inspecteur-generaal van zowel de Kon. Landmacht, als de Kon. Luchtmacht en de Kon. Marine, welke funktie in 1970 wordt gecombineerd in Inspecteur-generaal der Krijgsmacht. Sinds 1945 heeft hij een werkzaam aandeel in de opbouw van Nederland en ontplooit hij talloze aktiviteiten op sociaal, cultureel, economisch en ecologisch terrein. De prins maakt talrijke eizen naar Afrika, Noord- en Zuid Amerika, waarbnij hij als Goodwill-ambassadeur vriendschaps- en handelsrelaties tot stand brengt. In 1976 blijkt echter, dat hij hierbij zijn bevoegdheden heeft overtreden en wordt hij gedwongen zijn militaire funkties neer te leggen. Hij is een hartstochtelijk vlieger en heeft meer dan 200 verschillende vliegtuigen gevlogen. Daarnaast blijft hij zich inzetten voor natuurbehoud, waarbij hij o.m. de handel in ivoor en de neushoornstroperij bestrijdt met persoonlijke donaties (Bron: Van Ditzhuyzen, Oranje-Nassau, een biografisch woordenboek).
