Bernardus was de zoon van Gellius Schotanus, weleer pastoor van Oldehove te Leeuwarden, in 1589 predikant, in 1598 te Mijnsheerenland, in 1592 te Beusechem, in 1595 te Schelluynen en de Haer, in hetzelfde jaar te Wons en Engweir, eindelijk te Goutum en Zwickum. Zijn zoon Johannes Gellii Schotanus, predikant te Longerhouw, volgde hem in 1606 te Goutum op.


 


Bernardus era hijo de Gellius Schotanus, ex pastor de Oldehove en Leeuwarden, ministro en 1589, en 1598 en Mijnsheerenland, en 1592 en Beusechem, en 1595 en Schelluynen y de Haer, en el mismo año en Wons y Engweir, finalmente en Goutum y Zwickum. Su hijo Johannes Gellii Schotanus, ministro en Longerhouw, lo sucedió en Goutum en 1606.

Meinardus Schotanus estuvo casado dos veces con Dodonea Schotanus, hija de Johannes Schotanus, ministro en Goutum, quien le dio una hija, Geertruida, casada con Aegidius. Radaeus Revius. El inspector Bursae, nieto de Aegidius Radaeus, impresor de libros en Amberes, llamó a Franeker en 1585 como impresor de la academia. Su segunda esposa fue Mensia Winters.
