In 1680, a case against William was brought before the Grand Jury by merchants of New York accusing him of treason for collecting unlawful taxes and fees on goods and merchandise. ''[[Space:Collections of the New-York Genealogical and Biographical Society|Collections of the New-York Genealogical and Biographical Society]]'' (1912) this volume features preceedings of the General Court of Assizes, held in the city of New York from 10/6/1680 to 10/6/1862, and minutes of the Supreme Court of Judicature, 4/4/1693 to 4/1/1701. He was indicted in 1681. At trial, he denied the authority of the court and was sent to London to stand trial there. His trial was delayed by the prosecution and the charges were dropped 30 September 1682.
