    Op 15 november 1772 vertrok de "Bleiswijk" onder leiding van Kornelis de Roo, vanuit Fort Rammekens aan de Westerschelde voor een barre zeetocht richting de Oost. Eindbestemming Batavia.

    Aan boord 167 personeelsleden, 87 soldaten, 17 ambachtslieden en 1 passagier. Onder hen Huijg Knegt, die als matroos begon aan zijn eerste zeereis. Helaas is hij niet ver gekomen. Een maand na vertrek kwam het schip in een hevige storm terecht waardoor het schip vol water was gelopen. Op 14 december 1772 arriveerde het schip zwaar gehavend in de haven van Rochefort (noord Frankrijk). De mast was verloren gegaan en er waren meer dan 100 man gedood of gewond geraakt. Huijg Knegt was één van die gewonden. Na aankomst in Rochefort heeft hij nog een paar dagen geleefd waarna hij op 18 december 1772 is overleden. Huijg is 25 jaar geworden.
