Charles Smith Crichton became a Master Mariner and in 1901, was aboard .«b»SS Langton Grange«/b» , West India Docks, London.

and also of 190, Stockwell Road, Lambeth, London, in 1901.

The ship had sailed from Auckland 8th April the same year! and had in 1901, been carrying troops and 773 horses from Maitland, to Cape Town for the Boer War

Itappears that his ship, «b»The Langton Grange,«/b» berthed at West India Dock, in London, and built around 1896, and with a crew of 48, went down on in a Summer Fog, on 5th of August 1909, North Bishop' s Rocks, (Bell Rock specifically), in Pembrokeshire. It was whilst on a voyage in ballast from Clyde, to Newport Monmouthshire.

«b»Langton Grange.«/b» Steamship, 5852 tons. Built 1896. Houlder Bros. Wrecked on the coast of Pembrokeshire, broke up amidships, 5 August 1909.

Sunk on«b» 05/08/1909«/b» on the North Bishop's Rocks Pembrokeshire.

Did he go down with it??? .

Divers bought up wine and champagne bottles still corked. It is fair to assume that Charles was with ths ship all during the period 1896-1902. However , there is no evidence that he was aboard in August 1909 , when the ship struck rocks off the Pembrokeshire coast of Wales, broke up amidships and sank. (I have a photo of the«b» SS Langton Grange«/b»).

At first only thirty-four officers and men were sent out, and these went with Mounted Rifles on the transport «b»Langton Grange«/b», which carried a big cargo of horses.

The 4th Regiment was also represented in the South African Boer War by a small contingent that sailed direct from Newcastle on the «b»Langton Grange«/b». This led to the Battle Honour "South Africa" also being approved for display on the Regimental Colours.

«/b»The «b»Langton Grange«/b» sank in 1909, hitting Bell Rock. She weight 5,852 tons, 420 feet long and 54 feet wide. «/i»A dive not for the inexperienced, especially on the North going current. Slack water is about 3 hours after low water and high water, Milford Haven. Visibility is good. Launch out of Pothclais or Whitesands.

Stranding of the s.s. "Langton Grange" (Admiralty Charts).

«/b»HC Deb 19 August 1909 vol 9 cc1520-1 «u»1520«/u»

«u»§«/u» «u»Mr. JEREMIAH MacVEAGH «/u»

asked the President of the Board of Trade, with reference to the recent stranding of the s.s. "Langton Grange" on North Bishop's Rock, St. David's, whether he is aware that the disaster might have been averted if the rock had been indicated by a red line on the Admiralty Chart; and whether the charts will be revised in order that such points may be indicated?

«u»§«/u» «u»The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Churchill) «/u»

I have ordered a formal investigation into this casualty, and until I have received the Report of the Court of Inquiry I cannot say what the stranding was due to, or whether it might have been averted had the rock on which the vessel stranded been marked on the Admiralty Chart by a red line. I understand that the Admiralty are of opinion that to increase the marks on their charts in dangerous places in the manner suggested would render the charts illegible in places where legibility is most required, and would be more likely to confuse mariners than to help them.

«u»§«/u» «u»Mr. JEREMIAH MacVEAGH «/u»

In view of the appalling amount of damage done by some rocks on that part of the Irish coast, does the right hon. Gentleman not think that the Irish Lights Board should be urged to look into this matter more earnestly, and to take some practical action?

«u»§«/u» «u»Mr. CHURCHILL «/u»

They really are considering it, and I hope they will take some practical action early.

«u»§«/u» «u»Mr. MacVEAGH «/u»

They will not listen to anybody who knows anything about it.

Below may be his death details.
