A soldier from 1897. 2nd W Riding Reg, 11th Reg Duke of Wellington.
He was posted to England 1915 from the 2nd west riding Reg' (Duke of Wellington s Reg') who were in India for all of the Great War.
James Flaherty returned, along with other experienced soldiers to form and train the 11th. reg of the Dukes.
He went off to war in late 1916, he was now a company Sgt Maj to A Coy 11th Reg.
During the battle of Arras in 1917, his Company were marched in close order over a rise in the ground into shellfire.
He received 40 wounds, and was taken to the Casualty Clearance Station where he was put among the dead, and those not expected to make it.
After 3 days he managed (at the expense of almost causing an orderly to have a heart failure, after being taken by the ankle by a "Dead Man"), to attract attention to the fact
that 1) he was alive and 2) his gangrene had been eaten by maggotts.
After a long course of treatment, he was invalided out of the army.
He got a lot better, and worked until he was 65.
He also fathered 3 more children. Phyllis, James, and Marjorie.(Margaret)?PJW.
