BIRTH AND BAPTISM 1850

George was born on 28 January 1850 at 6 Clarendon Place, Somerstown, St Pancras, Middlesex and he was christened on 24 February 1850 at St Pancras Old Church. His father was Henry William Tanner, a Gentlemans Coachman and his mother was Elizabeth Ann Tanner, late Barrett, formerly Cox (see copies of birth certificate and IGI microfiche in appendix).

1841 CENSUS

The 1841 census for Avenue Road, Borough of Marylebone, Parish of St Marylebone (HO 107 / 678 / 13), lists Henry Tanner, aged 20, Profession MS (Male Servant), living with his wife Ann, aged 25 and a son Henry, aged 1. Also in the house was Charles Cox, aged 15 (Cox was the maiden name of Ann Tanner). None of the occupants was born in the same county (see copy in appendix).

CENSUS

The 1851 census for Clarendon Place, St Pancras, lists George Tanner, aged 1, born at St Pancras, Middlesex, son of Henry and Ann Tanner. Also in the house was Elizabeth Tanner, daughter, aged 9, born in Lambeth Middlesex (see copy of census in appendix).

1861 CENSUS

In the 1861 census (RG 9 75) Henry Tanner was living at No 10 Seymour Mews, aged 40, Profession Coachman (Domestic), born in Henley, Oxfordshire. He was living with his wife Elizabeth A. aged 46, born in Emsworth, Hants, his daughter Elizabeth, aged 17, a Dressmaker, born Lambeth, Surrey and his son George, aged 11 a Scholar, born St Pancras, Middlesex (see copy in appendix).

MARRIAGE 1869

George Henry Tanner married Eliza Long on 4 May 1869, (when he was 19 years old - no age was given on the marriage certificate). He was then living at Weymouth Mews, (Marylebone, St. Pancras, Middlesex) and he married at Trinity Church, in the parish of St Marylebone in the County of Middlesex. His profession at that time was a Coachman and his father was Henry William Tanner - also a Coachman. The marriage witnesses were John Hutchins and Elizabeth Ann Tanner (see copy of marriage certificate in appendix).

1871 CENSUS

The 1871 census for 20 Weymouth Mews, Marylebone, London, lists George H Tanner, aged 22, a Coachman, his wife Eliza Tanner, aged 26, born in Bath, Somerset and a son Alexander H, aged 2 months, born in Marylebone, Middlesex.

1881 CENSUS

The 1881 census for Kings Road, Barking, lists George H Tanner, aged 31, a Railway Porter, his wife Eliza, aged 37 and their children - Alexanr aged 10, born in Marylebone, London, Clara aged 8, born in Marylebone, London, Henry aged 7, born in Hoxton, London, William aged 6, born in Staffordr Whittington, Fredr aged 2, born in Kilburn, London (see copy of census return in appendix).

1891 CENSUS

The 1891 census for 109 Croydon Road, Plaistow, West Ham, lists George Tanner, aged 43, a Railway Signalman, his wife Eliza, aged 47, his sons Alexander, aged 20, a Dock Labourer, Harry, aged 19, a Painter, born in Hoxton, London, Frederick, aged 12, a Scholar, born in Kilburn, London and Edward, aged 8, a Scholar, born in Plaistow, Essex.

George Henry Tanner worked as a Signalman at Hademore Crossing, Whittington, Staffordshire and probably lived in the Railway Cottages, nearby. Later, he worked as a Signalman, while living in Willesden.

George then found employment as a Signalman with the Port of London Railways at the Galleons signalbox. A photograph of him and his signature appear in the book "P.L.A. Railways" by Thomas B. Peacock (The Locomotive Publishing Co Ltd.). See copies in appendix.

rbus Cordis Exhaushon" at the age of 49 in the London Hospital, Sub-District of Mile End New Town, registration district Whitechapel, County of London. He was living at that time at 109 Croydon Road,Plaistow and his profession was given as a Signalman. The informant was E Tanner, widow of deceased (see copy of death certificate in appendix).

BURIAL 1899

George Henry Tanner was buried in the family grave in East London Cemetary, Grange Road, Plaistow, tel. 071 476 5109 (grave no. 8486 in square 60). The burial date was 10 January 1899.

The monumental inscription reads "For the dear memory of our father and mother George Henry Tanner, who died January 1899 aged 49 years. Also Elisa Tanner who passed away Dec 1907 aged 64 years. Thou wast my rock and my fortress. In loving memory of Alex. Herbert Tanner who died Aug 1926 aged 56 years. And to the dear memory of Dick, William George Tanner who died Oct 5 1928 aged 53 years".

East London Cemetary stated that Eliza Tanner was buried 12 December 1907.

In grave number 8485, square 60 at East London Cemetary, a second Tanner family grave has the monumental inscription "In loving memory of Frederick J. Tanner died 1942. Susan Tanner died 1945. Frederick D. Tanner died 1969. God Bless".
