He was employed as a farm Laborer at Ascott farm in 1830 in Stadhampton, Oxon, working for one Yeoman Edward Franklin for 8 yrs 6 months. He was sent for trial on Jan 3 1831 in Oxford, and was sentenced to 7 years transportation for destroying a threshing machine the property of one James Wells, at Little Milton between 9-10pm on Nov 23 1830. He was sent to Portsmouth to board the transport ship 'Eliza'.
In Australia despite having a wife back home, he married fellow convict fromthe Leicester area, Caroline Moore on May 29 1842. He had already been declared a freeman by then and was working as an overseer in Tasmania.
