Notes about James (Jun) TOWN

Farm Labourer, Overseer 1842 Tasmania. Was Transported to Australia for rioting and smashing farm machinery where despite having a living wife in England he married fellow convict from England, (supposedly the Leicester area) «u»«b»«i»Caroline Moore «;/u»«/b»«/i»29 May 1842 in School House Waterloo Pt, Australia. She was born 1817«u»«b»«i» «/u»«/b»«/i»

He was employed as a farm Laborer at Ascott farm in 1830 in Stadhampton, Oxon, working for one Yeoman Edward Franklin for 8 yrs 6 months. He was sent for trial on Jan 3 1831 in Oxford, and was sentenced to 7 years transportation for destroying a threshing machine the property of one James Wells, at Little Milton between 9-10pm on Nov 23 1830. He was sent to Portsmouth to board the transport ship 'Eliza'.

In Australia despite having a wife back home, he married fellow convict fromthe Leicester area, Caroline Moore on May 29 1842. He had already been declared a freeman by then and was working as an overseer in Tasmania.

The Book 'Captain Swing' by EJ Hobsbawm & George Rude gives a factual account of the circumstances in which James found himself. He is actually mentioned on Page277 of the book and an extract, courtesy of Michael Town is included in the appendix
