KENDALL had no son that lived to adult age, and his name has long since disappeared from our municipal record; yet perhaps there is no one of the first settlers that can be pointed out, whose blood through his eight daughters diverging has come down to us through so many families, and still flows in the veins of so many of the present population of the town.

COLONIAL FAMILIES OF THE UNITED STATES Vol VII p. 327

The Kendall family, which is very old in England, derives its name from the town of Kendall on the Kent River in Westmoreland County. Among the best known of its early representatives was John Kendall, Sheriff of Nottingham, who was killed at the Battle of Bosworth 1485, while fighting in the army of Richard III. Branches of the family are found in many parts of England and America.

John Kendall, ancestor of the New England family, was living in Cambridgeshire, England, in 1646, and d. there 1660. Issue:

1. Francis, b. circa 1620; came to America and was living at Charlestown, Massachusetts, in 1640; he emigrated under the name of Miles in order, it is said, to conceal his intentions from his family. At Charlestown he signed the town orders for the new town of Woburn and was one of its first and most prominent inhabitants, serving for eighteen years on the Board of Selectmen and on various town Committees. He owned and operated a mill on one of the streams at Woburn and is described by Sewell as "a gentleman of great respectability and influence in the place of his residence." In a strict Puritan community, he had the courage to differ slightly in faith from the majority for which he was duly fined. He m. 24th December 1644 Mary, dau of Sergt John Tidd, the first man in Woburn to bear a military title. Francis Kendall d. in 1708, at the age of 88.

2. THOMAS emigrated to Reading, Massachusetts, where he was one of the most influential of the early settlers; a Deacon of the church and for many years a Selectman; his only son d. an infant, but through his eight daughters, he has a large posterity.

A family's legacy gets diluted when there's nobody to carry on the name. This is what happened to the descendants of Thomas Kendall, a man who may have been forgotten as the founder of a family in America by the mere fact he had no surviving sons.

Note: Thomas was said to have been born in about 1617 in Norwich, England. His parents may have been John Kendall and Elizabeth Sacherall. It is known that he had a brother Francis who migrated to America with him. Thomas came over on the ship Defence, arriving in Boston on October 8, 1635. While Francis settled in Woburn, Thomas went to Reading, where he married Rebecca Paine in about 1640. He became freeman on May 10, 1645 and served as a deacon.

Between 1642 and 1665, Thomas and Rebecca had 11 children. All but one were girls; the only boy died as an infant. Of the ten daughters, two died as babies, giving the Kendalls a family of eight girls. One by one, they married, many staying in Reading and populating the town with their children. Knowing their father's name would die out, each daughter is said to have named one of her sons "Kendall." The name carried on for several more generations as a male given name, but when genealogies were later written about the Kendall family in America, Thomas was only given a brief mention with all focus on his brother Francis' line.

See "Colonial Families of the United States of America," edited by George Norbury McKenzie, page 327. While there really isn't a lot of information, there is a little. McKenzie states that "he was one of the most influential of the early settlers" and indicates that he has many descendants through his eight daughters.

Thomas had another daughter also named Sarah that was born after the first one died. She was born on June 22, 1653 in Reading, Massachusetts. She married Samuel Dunton on June 17, 1673 in Reading, MA and she died on November 20, 1734 in Billerica, MA. I am descended from their son, Ebenezer Dunton.

Biography

Birth

Thomas Kendall was born in England about 1618, based on his age at death.[1] Nothing is known of his ancestry. No evidence has been found to support a claim that he was born in 1616/17 at Cambridge, Middlesex, England, as a son of a John and Elizabeth (Searth) Kendall.

Immigration

An article in The Essex Genealogist in 1999 claimed that Thomas Kendall came from Charlestown, Massachusetts, to Lynn Village (later Reading), Massachusetts.[2] It cites no sources, and no record of him at Charlestown has been found. The earliest documentary evidence of him in New England is the birth of his first known child, Elizabeth Kendall, at Lynn Village on 17 Feb 1642,[3] Because few ships crossed the North Atlantic in the winter, it is likely that he was in New England by 1641. Robert Charles Anderson does not include him in his Great Migration Directory, which lists all immigrants for which Anderson found documentation that they were in New England by 1640.[4] Marriage

Thomas Kendall married Rebecca (Unknown) by the birth of their first known child, at Lynn Village, Massachusetts, on 17 Feb 1642.[3] Residence at Lynn

Lynn Village became the town of Reading in 1644. Thomas Kendall served Reading as a selectman for many years and was a deacon of the church.[5] The house built by Thomas Kendall still stands, at One Prospect Street in Wakefield, although how much the current structure looks like the original is uncertain, because of extensive reconstruction following a 1786 fire. The home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.[6] Children

The day of 15 Sep 1663 must have been a day of great rejoicing for the Kendalls, for on that day, after the birth of nine daughters (eight of whom were to live to adulthood and marry), 45-year-old Rebecca Kendall bore Thomas Kendall a son, who was named after his father. The joy was short-lived, for young Thomas died less than 10 months later, and Thomas Kendall thus had no male line to carry on his name. Thomas and Elizabeth Kendall had the following children, all born at Reading (Lynn Village until 1644):[7]

Elizabeth Kendall bom 1642, married John Eaton
Rebecca born 1644. married 1661 James Boutwell
Mary bom 1647, married 1664.
Hannah bom 1650, married 1667
Sarah #1 bom and died 1650
Sarah #2 b. 1653, married Samuel Dunton
Abigail born 1655, married John Nichols
Susanna born 165S, married Nathaniel Goodwin
Tabitha born 1660, married John Pearson
Thomas bom 1663, died 1664.

Death and Burial

Thomas Kendall died, intestate, at Reading on 22 Jul 1681, aged 63 years, and he is buried as Sergeant Thomas Kendall at the Old Burial Place in South Reading, now in the town of Wakefield.[1] His “richly carved gravestone” is adorned with common secondary death symbols such as coffins, bones, picks, and shovels and includes the inscription “Fugit Hora” (“time flies”).[8] Probate

On 30 Sep 1681, the sons-in-law of Thomas Kendall, with the consent of his widow, disposed of his property. The agreement was signed by Jno. Eaton, Brother Jno. Parker, Brother Nathaniel Goodwin, Bro. Abraham Brient [Bryant], Bro. Jno. Niccols [Nichols], Bro: John Person [Pearson], Bro. Samll Dunken [Dunton], and Bro. James Bowtell [Boutwell].[9] Sources

A family's legacy gets diluted when there's nobody to carry on the name. This is what happened to the

descendants of Thomas Kendall, a man who may have been

forgotten as the founder of a family in America by the mere fact he had no surviving sons.
