Notes about Bernhardine Eugenie Desirée "Desirée" Clary

Bernhardine Eugénie Désirée Clary (Marseille, 9 november 1777 - Stockholm, 17 december 1860) was verloofde van Napoleon Bonaparte en werd later koningin van Zweden en Noorwegen.

Ze werd geboren als dochter van de rijke zijdehandelaar François Clary (1725-1794) en Françoise Rose Somis (1737-1815) en leerde na de dood van haar vader de gebroeders Napoleon en Jozef Bonaparte kennen. Aanvankelijk maakte Jozef haar het hof, maar op 21 april 1795 verloofde ze zich met Napoleon. Haar zuster Julie was inmiddels met Jozef getrouwd. Toen Napoleon echter Joséphine de Beauharnais leerde kennen verbrak hij de verloving.

Désirée trad op 17 augustus 1798 te Sceaux in het huwelijk met generaal Jean-Baptist Bernadotte. Bernadotte werd in 1818 als Karel XIV Johan tot koning van Zweden en Noorwegen gekroond. Koningin Desideria — zoals Désirée vanaf dan werd genoemd — kon echter niet aan Zweden wennen en bracht — vooral voor 1823 — veel tijd door in Parijs. Ze stierf op 17 december 1860 te Stockholm, anderhalf jaar na de dood van haar enige kind: Oscar I.
