Notes about Johan Willem Hertog van Kleef

Johan Willem (1562-1609) was de tweede zoon van hertog Willem V van Kleef en Maria van Oostenrijk. Van 1571 tot 1585 was Johan Willem coadjutor van Münster en streng katholiek, waardoor hij in conflict kwam met zijn vader. In 1592 volgde hij zijn vader op als hertog van Kleef, Gulik en Berg en graaf van Mark. Door de achteruitgang van zijn geestelijke gezondheid was hij op de duur niet meer bekwaam tot regeren.

Bij zijn dood in 1609 barstte een opvolgingsstrijd uit tussen verschillende Duitse vorsten, waaronder zijn drie zwagers. Deze Guliks-Kleefse opvolgingsstrijd eindigde (voorlopig) met het Verdrag van Xanthen in 1614. Hierbij werd het landencomplex Kleef-Gulik-Berg verdeeld tussen keurvorst Johan Sigismund van Brandenburg en hertog Wolfgang Willem van Palts-Neuburg. Deze verdeling werd echter niet aanvaard door een derde pretendent, de hertog van Saksen, en de Duitse keizer. Een definitief akkoord kwam er pas met het Verdrag van Kleef in 1666. Dat verdrag bevestigde min of meer de situatie zoals vastgelegd in 1614. Hierbij gingen de hertogdommen Gulik en Berg alsmede de Vlaamse heerlijkheid Wijnendale naar Palts-Neuburg. Brandenburg verwierf het hertogdom Kleef en de graafschappen Mark en Ravensberg.
