Notes about Margaretha van Parma Landvoogdes der Nederlanden

Margaretha van Parma (Oudenaarde 28 december 1522 - Ortona, 18 januari 1586) was landvoogdes voor Filips II over de Nederlanden van 1559 tot 1567, toen de Hertog van Alva naar de Nederlanden werd gezonden.

Ze was een buitenechtelijk kind van keizer Karel V. Haar moeder was Johanna van der Gheynst, dochter van een wever uit Oudenaarde. Ze werd gedoopt in de kerk van Pamele en opgevoed in Brussel onder toezicht van Margaretha van Oostenrijk en Maria van Hongarije, meer bepaald in het gezin van Andries van Douvrin, heer van Drogenbos en Sint-Martens-Bodegem.

Ze huwde tweemaal. Op 29 februari 1536 trouwde ze in Napels met haar eerste echtgenoot Alessandro de' Medici, hertog van Florence. Nadat deze was vermoord in 1537, huwde ze op 4 november 1538 in Rome met Ottavio Farnese, een kleinzoon van Paus Paulus III. Zij hadden een kind, de latere landvoogd Alexander Farnese.

Gedurende haar regering over de Nederlanden kwam Margaretha steeds meer in de klem tussen haar halfbroer de koning enerzijds en de lokale adel anderzijds. Daarbij speelde de Hervorming een doorslaggevende rol.

Margaretha probeerde het onverzoenlijke te verzoenen. Op 5 april 1566 nam ze het smeekschrift van de edelen in ontvangst, maar de koning gaf haar geen ruimte om concessies te doen. Toen hij de hertog van Alva stuurde om met militair geweld het gezag te herstellen, legde Margaretha teleurgesteld haar ambt neer.

Jan Siebelink schreef een roman over het leven van Margaretha.
