Notes about Amalia van Solms-Braunfels Vrouwe van Zevenbergen

Zij bedwong zich om zich niet met de politieke zaken van Frederik Hendrik te bemoeien, maar na de vroege dood van haar zoon in 1650 zag zij haar kans schoon. Toen in 1660 ook nog haar schoondochter, Mary Stuart, overleed kwam haar tijd.
Amalia was een achterkleindochter van Juliana van Stolberg en was een hofdame uit het gevolg van de in 1620 verjaagde koning van Bohemen (Frederik V van de Palts, een achterkleinzoon van Juliana van Stolberg) die zijn toevlucht in Den Haag gezocht had.
Amalia's familie was bepaald niet rijk, maar haar afkomst was onberispelijk en ze was calviniste. Ze was intelligent en ambitieus. Onder invloed van haar optreden is het Huis van Oranje tot een dynastie van Europees formaat uitgegroeid. Het Haagse hofleven - onder Maurits wat armetierig - bracht zij op het peil van dat van de omringende landen. De Oranjeverblijven als Huis ten Bosch in Den Haag en slot Honselaarsdijk in Naaldwijk liet ze fors uitbreiden en verfraaien.
Ze was dan ook van mening dat haar kinderen met vooraanstaande vorsten konden en moesten trouwen.
Aanvankelijk moest ze niet veel hebben van Frankrijk, maar later was ze voor een spoedige vrede met Frankrijk. Later was ze meer tegen Engeland gekant, alleen om meer invloed op haar zoon te hebben.
Ze heeft haar man achtentwintig jaar overleefd en haar zoon vijfentwintig jaar. Met haar Engelse schoondochter heeft ze tien jaar ruzie gemaakt over het kleinkind Willem, waarvan ze tenslotte zijn herstel in de stadhouderlijke waardigheid heeft meegemaakt.
