Notes about Johanna II Capet Koningin van Navarra

Johanna II van Navarra (1311 – 1349) was de enige dochter van koning Lodewijk X van Frankrijk. Haar broertje Jan, dat na de dood van hun vader nog geboren werd, was tien dagen koning van Frankrijk tot hij stierf. In principe zou Johanna dus de eerste regerende koningin van Frankrijk moeten geweest zijn, maar haar voogd deed in haar naam afstand zodat de twee jongere broers van Lodewijk elkaar opvolgden als koning. Beiden hadden geen zoons en daarme ontstond de erfkwestie die tot de Honderdjarige Oorlog zou leiden. De kroon ging naar een neef, maar de Engelse koning eiste ook de kroon op omdat hij de zoon van een zuster van Lodewijk X was. Als zijn claim van vrouwelijke erfopvolging echter rechtsgeldig was, zou Johanna echter de betere papieren gehad hebben.

Johanna trouwde met een andere neef van Lodewijk X, Filips hertog van Evreux. Hun zoon, Karel II de Slechte erfde de koningstitel van Navarra en was zich van zijn rechten op de Franse kroon maar al te bewust. Hij bezat ook uitgestrekte gebiedsdelen in Frankrijk onder andere vlak bij Parijs en trachtte de Lancasters tegen de Valois uit te spelen om zelf op de troon te komen.
