Hij was een kerel! Een van ouden stempel:
Geen flauwsjen en geen argwaan lustte hem
Inwendig, waar het ruim was als een tempel,
Klonk naast Gods Woord alleen zijn eigen stem.
Daar leefde hij, voortdurend bij den drempel,
Vanwaar men uitziet op Jeruzalem.
Zijn taal was beeldend, innig wel, als een dichter,
Hoe duister soms zijn woord, ons werd de wereld lichter.

Zijn taak was zaak van loon niet, maar van ere,
Ja, eerlijk als de man, was ook zijn werk.
Hij diende Eenen, en geen andere Heere,
Dus droeg het Diens, en nimmer Mammons werk.
Hij liet zich tot geen lager plan verneeren,
Schoon need'rig, hoeveel meer dan sterk'ren sterk.
Iets was er van de geest in hem der oude volken:
Hoe klein ook hun bestaan, hun werk wist van de wolken.

Hoe menig uur zat hij bij ons te praten,
En voelde zich als een oude vriend vertrouwd.
Wat verder stond zijn roestig wiel verlaten,
Tegen een boom geleund in 't zonnegoud.
Hoe kwam het, dat wij al 't andere vergaten
Hier aan de bosrand, bij het dennenhout?
De tijd glee van ons heen, maar 't hart sloeg de seconden,
Waardoor wij, zaligen, de eeuwigheid verstonden.

Hij wist ook van den lach, zelfs van den schater,
Hoe kon die klinken uit zijn brede mond!
Hij was geen miezerige levenshater,
Die nimmer uitweg naar de blijdschap vond.
Een kwinkslag spoot eruit, als levend water,
Dat schitterde van sprank'ling in het rond.
En als de tranen hem dan langs de wangen vloeiden,
Wie onzer, die niet met hem van het lachen loeide?

Beschreef hij dan weer, hoe hei en dennen,
- als de natuur na onweer vree hervond -
konijntjes weer begonnen rond te rennen,
en dunne dampen rezen uit de grond,
Hem ied're drop de zon weer dee herkennen,
Wijl 't tederst wolkjen hem zijn groeten zond.
Dan ook, dan welden wel de tranen uit zijn ogen,
Bij het herschouwen van het hemels mededogen.

Hij hield zich aan maatschappelijke banden,
En was tevreden met een enge grens.
Maar 't hart vloog hem, hoog over alle standen,
En zag in ons alleen de evenmens...
Hoe kwam het, dat hij juist bij ons belandde?
Bevroedde hij een heimelijke wens?
Ja, 't wist... en strompelend, nog deze laatste zomer,
Wist hij, van geest al zwak, zich toch een welkom komer.
