DAVID SANDRA, geb. Middelburg 19 juni 1660, verzocht 28 juli 1682 VeniamAetatis (meerderjarigheidsverklaring) aan de Staten van Zeeland43, neringdoende (winkelier), leverde ‘swart laeckene doodpelle’ en ‘gelatene suyker’ aan het Gasthuis44, lid van het kiezerscollege van Middelburg 1688-1704, regent van het Gasthuis 1690-170445, werd in 1697 samen met de andere Gasthuisregenten geportretteerd door de schilder J. Bizet46, hoofdparticipant van de WIC, had in 1703 een geschat inkomen van 3000 gulden47, woonde op de Dam, hoek Bellinkstraat, betaalde in dat jaar 7 pond vlaams belasting over twee dienstboden, een speelwagen en ‘twee paerden en een rijpaert’48. David was in de hoedanigheid van kiesheer op het stadhuis aanwezig bij ‘Het Tumult van 26 januari 1704’, werd daarop door de baljuw aangeklaagd, op ‘biljetten publiek ten toon gesteld’ en vervolgd wegens samenzwering tegen de wettige Regeering van Middelburg. Hij wendde zich tot het Hof van Holland om de gerechtelijke procedures te laten stuiten, dit werd
door de Middelburgse magistraat genegeerd en op 14 juli 1704 werden hij en zijn confraters schuldig verklaard. Het vonnis luidde dat ‘den selven (werd) vervallen van zijn Kiesers ampt, gecondemneert in de kosten’ en hij werd verder verplicht, op straffe van verbanning uit de stad, binnen acht dagen een eed van trouw aan de magistraat af te leggen49. David, ‘over al na geschreven en opgesocht----- even of hij een Moordenaar was’49, legde de eed niet af, kon dat ‘niet overeenbrengen met sijn gemoed en Eed tevoren als kieser en retireert’50. Op 21 oktober 1705 werd het Hof van Holland door de Staten van Holland gelast alle rechtshandelingen in de zaak op te schorten. Noodgedwongen ging David op het platteland wonen, logeerde op ‘Het Witte Hof’, een buitenhuis in Koudekerke51, eigendom van een medebanneling. Men liet hem echter niet met rust, want op 12 augustus 1706 deed de baljuw een inval in zijn huis in Middelburg, waarover David een klacht deponeerde bij het Hof van Holland52 en op 17 februari 1709 werd hij, na een bezoek aan Vlissingen op terugreis naar ‘Het Witte Hof’, op Middelburgs grondgebied aangehouden en naar Vlissings territoir geëscorteerd, ‘onder bedreijginge van hem te sullen apprehenderen, soo hij meer onder Middelburg gevonden werd’53. Hij stond als doopget. Oost Souburg 28 september 1710 bij zijn kleinzoon David Sandra. Op 1 oktober 1712 kondigde de Regering van Middelburg algemene amnestie af voor allen die bij de politieke troebelen sinds 1702 betrokken waren geweest54. David woonde sinds die tijd weer in Middelburg op de Dam en bezocht met grote regelmaat de vergaderingen van de hoofdparticipanten van de WIC55, begr. in de Oude Kerk 17 april 1715. Postuum werd hij weer in ere hersteld, want per resolutie van 25 juli 1716 besloten Wet en Raad ‘af te doen alle criminele procedueren en sententien met den gevolge van dien’, met teruggave van recognisitiegelden wegens zijn verloren ambt als kiezer.
