Notes about Willem Ruysch

Op 18 oktober 1940 werd hij wegens steun aan het verzet voor de eerste maal gearresteerd en tot 17 mei 1941 in gevangenschap gehouden. Op 11 oktober 1941 volgde een tweede aanhouding, wel in verband met contact dat hij had gehad met een Engels agent. Ditmaal zat hij vast tot 5 januari 1942. Op 13 juli van dit zelfde jaar werd hij als gijzelaar gevangen gezet te Haaren, waar hij in deze geïsoleerde gemeenschap onmiddellijk weer een actieve rol speelde als pakketpostmeester. Doch op 7 augustus 1942 werd door een communistische groep een aanslag gepleegd op een spoorwegviaduct te Rotterdam. De Duitse autoriteiten antwoordden hierop door het fusilleren van vijf gijzelaars in vooraanstaande maatschappelijke posities, waaronder drie Rotterdammers.
