Als im 17. Jahrhundert die Räumlichkeiten der Burg für die mittlerweile sehr stark angewachsenen Familie nicht mehr ausreichten, verkauften die drei Söhne von Otto Christoph von Baumbach, Christian Heinrich, Carl Eberhard und Adam Reinhard am 21. Juli 1698 ihre fünfachtel Anteile in Nentershausen, Ruhla und anderen Orten dem damaligen Landgrafen Karl und legten den Erlös in neuen Gütern an. So teilte sich die Familie von Baumbach weiter in die drei Linien zu Gilserhof, zu Freudenthal und zu Amönau.
