Notes about Karel Gerrit Willem Baron van Wassenaar

Een kleinzoon van Otto wordt de laatste eigenaar/bewoner van het kasteel. Veel ergernis en verdriet heeft hij gehad over de plannen van de autosnelweg Utrecht-Arnhem, die dwars door zijn prachtige landgoed zou komen te liggen. Zijn verzet heeft niet mogen baten en omdat de grond anders toch onteigend zou worden, verkocht hij een deel van zijn grond aan het rijk. Eén concessie kreeg hij gedaan: er werd een tunneltje in de omgeving van het monument onder de snelweg door gelegd. Hierdoor waren beide delen van het landgoed met elkaar verbonden. Het zou echter tot 1954 duren eer de weg, in de volksmond het hazepad genoemd, gereed kwam.
Ook de oorlogsjaren hebben rampspoed gebracht in de familie Van Wassenaar. Het kasteel werd in beslag genomen door de bezetter en totaal uitgewoond. Hij heeft nog een tijdje in de naastgelegen woning "Noordereng" gewoond. De baron trok later naar Driebergen, waar hij in 1946 is overleden.
