Intussen was Lauri, de Fin, in haar leven gekomen. Hij had in Leningrad en Moskou gestudeerd en was overtuigd communist. Ze trouwden in 1940 en het leven leek wat beter te worden. Toen Finland in 1941 de kant van Hitler koos, was Lauri op een dag verdwenen. 'Hij was al een paar dagen niet thuis geweest, toen zei een goede vriend: Weet je niet waar hij is? Ik wist het niet, maar hij wel. Lauri was als vrijwilliger naar het Fins-Russische front gegaan. Hij schreef later wel, maar dat heeft maar even geduurd. Hij moet al in het begin van de oorlog gesneuveld zijn'.
