Leo Daniel Thiels, age, 78 years, 1 month and 13 days, husband of Beverly (Taylor) Thiels, of Pine Knot, Ky. Passed away Tuesday Oct. 3, 2001 at Baptist Health Care in Lexington, Ky.
The family chose cremation and a memorial service for Leo was held on Monday, October 7, 2019 in the chapel of the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home and began at 7:00pm with Bro. William Kilby Officiating. The family chose to privately bury his ashes in the Gillespie Cemetery in North Carolina.
Leo was born on August 20, 1941 in Alexandria, Louisiana, to John Augustus Thiels and Alice (Hickman) Thiels. Upon finishing high school, Leo enrolled in LSU where he graduated with a degree in forestry, joined the Army National Guard, and later, worked for the US Forest service, retiring in 1990. While with the Forest service he was member of an elite fire fighting team that fought fires across the United States. Following his career with the US Forest Service, he was employed by Outdoor Venture Corporation where he worked in the Quality Control section until 2019.
Leo Was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed the outdoors and tending his property at Rock Creek. He also enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. In 1991-1992, he served as Post Commander of The American Legion, Post 115. Leo was of the Catholic Faith and attended The Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Whitley City.
Leo is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Beverly Thiels,
His sons, John Thiels, Ypsilanti, Michigan, and Dan Thiels, Pearce, Arizona, also a granddaughter, Alison Thiels ,one sister, Mildred Chubbuck, Baton, Rouge, LA. Several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, John Macahan. He was preceded in death by two Sisters, Margaret Ann Maichel, and Marilyn Vaughn.
Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home was honored to serve the family of Leo Daniel Thiels.
