He married October 821 ERMENGARDE, daughter of Hugues, Count of Tours, by his wife, Ava. They had three sons, Louis (II) [King of Italy, Emperor], Lothair (II) [King of Lorraine], and Charles [King of Provence], and five daughters, Helletrude (or Hiltrude) (wife of Count Berenger), Bertha [Abbess of Avenay], ___ (wife of Giselbert, Count of Masau and Darnau), Gisele [Abbess of San Salvatore, Brescia], Rotnide (probable wife of Lambert II, Count of Nantes). By an unknown mistress, he also had one illegitimate son, Carlomann. His wife, Ermengarde, died 20 March 851.
