Zijn ouders overlijden in 1918, Jan is dan 5 jaar. Hij wordt bij de fam Floris in huis genomen samen met zijn broer Harrie. Hij wilde in zijn jeugd veearts worden. Daar is het nooit van gekomen. Na de lagere school moest er gewerkt worden. Na zijn huwelijk gaat hij wonen aan de Zwaagdijk. Daar is door bemiddeling van zijn schoonvader Tamis van Diepen in 1939 voor Jan een boerderij gekocht van Jan Kok. Het was het tweede huis links vanaf de van der Deureweg richting Wervershoof. In het bij de boerderij behorende land bleek veel unjer te groeien. In 1940 werd de boerderij verkocht aan Gerrit Grippeling. De eerste 3 kalveren die op deze boerderij waren geboren werden voor f 10,- per stuk verkocht en 6 lammeren werden voor samen f 24,-van de hand gedaan op de markt. Van het geld dat vrij kwam van de erfenis van zijn ouders kocht hij van de erven Ruiter in Grosthuizen op een veiling bij opbod en afslag een boerderij. Deze boerderij werd gemijnd op f 1,- voor f 28.000,- gulden.
Begraven op het RK kerkhof van de Onze Lieve Vrouw van de Heilige Rozenkrans te De Goorn.
