Geboren op de boerderij aan het Zuideinde, dit is het meest westelijke stukje van de Middenweg. Verhuisde in 1929, en woonde tot haar tiende jaar op de boerderij aan de Groenedijk, nabij de Berkmeerdijk.. Zat op de lagere school aan de Hondeweg, de latere van Veenweg. Op haar 11de jaar zag ze voor het eerst een tomaat. Na de lagere school hielp ze samen met haar zus Annie thuis in de huishouding, moeder stond dan in de winkel. Na de oorlog gaat zij, tot zij gaat trouwen in 1949 in de huishouding werken bij de familie Komen, de latere burgemeester van Spanbroek. Toen ze 12 1/2 jaar waren getrouwd, zo vertelde ze, aten ze voor het eerst hagelslag op brood.
