Notes about Johannes Baltus Winterberg

Bij de volkstelling van 1795 staat in het derde quartier van Hasselt in de kolom "Namen en toenamen van de hoofden der huijsgezinnen met derzelver bedrijff" Baltus Winterbarg, een castelijn. De opgave werd gedaan door Johanna V.D. Warff. Het gezin bestond uit drie personen: Baltus, Johanna en dochter Elizabeth.

Baltus had een café aan de Markt te Hasselt: Het nog steeds bestaande café "De Zon".
Situatie in 1863
Links aan de voorkant was een ruimte met twee ramen op de markt. Daarin stonden een tapkast met vijf karaffen, 28 glazen en meubels. Beneden was een tweede kamer die twee ramen had op de markt en één op de Hofstraat. Daar waren twee bedsteden, tafels, stoelen en artikelen voor de horeca en het huishouden zoals zes koperen ketels. Van geheel andere aard was een dambord. In het voorhuis was kennelijk ook de winkel vanwege een toonbank, een kassa en drie winkelplanken(uitbater Wilke* had een vergunning ‘Inlandsch Kramer’: o.a. handel in scheermessen, pijpen, tabaksdozen). Beneden was ook nog een klein kamertje en een keuken met een raam dat uitzag op de binnenplaats(op huidige plek keuken/toiletten). Vanwege de daar aanwezige pannenkoekspan weten we dat er pannenkoeken gegeten werden. Op de bovenverdieping waren twee kamers, beiden met twee ramen uitziend op de Markt. Daarin stonden bedden, tafels, stoelen enz. Op de zolder (welke?) stonden twee
oude ledikanten en was er een kamertje met onder meer dekens. Alle dekbedden,
peluwen en kussens waren gevuld met doezebollen**.
Ergens in dit logement woonde ook de familie Wilke. Wanneer we ervan uitgaan dat op de plaats van het huidige biljart/koelcel de stal was dan moet dat wel in ‘t kleine kamertje en de keuken beneden zijn geweest.
* Wilke was een achterkleinzoon van Baltus Winterberg.
** Pluimen van de lisdodde.
Het pand is thans een rijksmonument, nr. 20898.
