    Hij ging als belangrijkste boer in West-IJsselmonde diverse functies in het dorps- en polderbestuur vervullen. Zo was hij schepen van West-IJsselmonde(1601-22), laagheemraad (1602-22) en penningmeester (1613-15) van de polders Dirk Smeetsland & Mr. Arend v.d. Woudenland en bracht het zelfs tot hoogheemraad van de vier polders van West-IJsselmonde (1614-24). Ondanks deze vliegende start ontstonden in d ejaren daarna enkele schulden :rentebrieven in 1602 en 1609 en een grotere schuld door de aankoop van land in de polder 68 Morgen. Wellicht lag deze laatste koop boven zijn financiële draagkracht, ewant in 1620 lijkt Gerrit in serieuze geldnood te zijn gekomen. Na zijn overlijden enkele jaren later, werd de boedel failliet verklaard en werden de resterende bezittingen door de curator verkocht.
