Notes about Johannes Arnoldus Jurgens

Jan Jurgens gaat met zijn gezin wonen in een villa aan de Molenstraat in Oss. Hij noemt de villa naar zijn vrouw "Josina". Zij bouwt een verzamelinguitheemse planten op in de tuin bij het huis. De tuin strekt dan tot de Klaphekkenstraat, waarlangs de tuinmanswoning wordt gebouwd die later doorde wattenfabriek van de Gebrs. van den Bergh zal worden aangekocht.
Jan wordt in 1867 bij de oprichting van de Firma Antoon Jurgens medefirmant. Nadat heren van de firma Cordeweener, die dan het patentrecht bezit, eenmonster kunstboter hadden aangeboden gaat Jan met Cordeweener en Peeters naar Parijs, waar Mège-Mouriès laat zien hoe hij oleo-margarine uit gesmoltenvet bereidt. In 1871 gaat de firma Antoon Jurgens kunstboter bereiden.
Jan zet na het overlijden van zijn vader de zaak met zijn twee broers, Henri en Arnold, voort. Als Henri in 1888 plotseling overlijdt, gaat Jan, samenmet zijn broer Arnold verder in de firma Ant. Jurgens & Prinzen te Goch. Henri's zoon Arnold wordt dan in de vennootschap opgenomen.In 1891 trektArnold zich uit de firma terug.
In 1874 bevalt een ongehuwde dienstmaagd, in dienst bij het gezin van Jan Jurgens in Villa Josina aan de Molenstraat of in Huize Kio, waar het gezinvan Jans broer Henri woont, van een zoon: Adrianus van de Rakt. Een dochter van hem bewaart haar leven lang met veel eerbied een portret van Jan Jurgensop een prominente plaats.
Ontevreden fabrieksarbeiders noemen hem Lange Jan. In 1890 doet Jan aangifte van laster, hij werd "mof" genoemd en van hoererij beticht. De kuiperMartinus van Berkum, bijgenaamd "de Baron" dreigt hem dood te schieten na de arrestatie van diens zoon in 1893. (Nagel, dr. W.H. De criminaliteitvan Oss. 's-Gravenhage: D.A. Jan was medefirmant van Ant. Jurgens Margarinefabrieken. In het maatschappelijk leven van Oss nam hij een vooraanstaande plaats in. Volgens zijn wil,werd de villa na zijn overlijden bestemd voor de huisvesting van middelbaar onderwijs.
