Was in 1948 betrokken bij de totstandkoming van de Drentse studenten zanggroep De Thrianta's, waaraan hij tot 1956, het jaar van de opheffing van de groep, als zanger en tekstschrijver verbonden was.

Samen met mede-Thriantaan Henk van Dijk vertrok hij naar Hilversum, waar zij gezamenlijk aan diverse radio- en televisie-uitzendingen meewerkten: onder meer met Corry Brokken en Jetty Pearl (Jetje van Radio Oranje) aan het wekelijkse radioprogramma 'Refrein Festijn' en in weer andere samenstellingen, o.a. met Dick Doorn en Henk Janmaat aan de maandelijkse televisieprogramma's 'Zeven liedjes op zaterdagavond' en 'Publieke tribune' met de acteurs Ton, Luc en Pieter Lutz. Zijn laatste tv-optreden vond plaats in 1960, toen hij meedeed aan de Nederlandse finale van het Eurovisie Songfestival. Met weinig succes overigens. Het ene puntje dat hij kreeg, kwam van het Drentse jurylid.

Behalve voor de Vara werkte hij ook voor de Avro, onder meer met het programma 'De muziek waarvan wij houden'. In die periode leerde hij radio-omroepster Ilse Wessel kennen, met wie hij in 1959 trouwde. Een jaar later voltooide hij z'n studie Sociologie aan de RU in Groningen en trad bij de Avro in dienst als beleids-medewerker. Met een orkest onder leiding van Henk van Dijk maakte hij een 45-toerenplaat met o.a. het nummer Afscheid zonder meer dat min of meer een evergreen is geworden en met Corry Brokken zong hij een aantal duetten op haar lp Corry's Bedtime Stories.
