De Hofuku Maru (5.825 ton, vrachtschip, soms ook aan­geduid als Fuku Maru, Toyofuku Maru of Fuji Maru) vertrok op 4-7-1944 met 1287 krijgsgevangenen (1076 Engelsen en 213 Nederlanders) uit Singapore met bestem­­ming Japan; deze krijgsgevangenen waren allen afkom­stig van de Birma-spoorweg, vertrokken uit Chungkai op 8-6-1944. Het transport naar Japan vond plaats in een convooi van totaal 13 schepen (5 schepen met krijgsgevangenen, behalve de Hofuku Maru: Asaka Maru 1, Hakushika Maru, Rashin Maru en Sekiho Maru). Deze krijgsge­vangenen behoorden tot de Japan Party 2.
Op 8-7-1944 werd de haven van Miri aan de noordkust van Borneo bereikt. Hier bleef de Hofuku Maru achter wegens motorschade. De mannen in de ruimen hadden een ernstig tekort aan drinkwater; velen verzwakten ernstig, er vielen ook doden. Na ongeveer 3 weken vertrok het schip richting Manila.
Op 12-9-1944 kwam het schip aan in Manila; hier moest het schip wachten op de vorming van een nieuw convooi. In de baai liggend werden 50 zieken (waarvan 12 Neder­landers) van boord gehaald.
Op 21-9-1944 vertrok het convooi in noordelijke richting. Kort daarna - nog voor de kust van Bataän - werd het convooi aangevallen door Amerikaanse bommenwerpers. De Hofuku Maru kreeg 2 "near missers" en 2 vol­treffers, waardoor het schip binnen 2 minuten zonk. Vermoedelijk werd het gehele convooi tot zinken ge­bracht (de over­levenden zagen geen enkel schip meer). Drenkelingen in het water werden ook nog gemi­trailleerd door de vlieg­tuigen, omdat de vliegers dachten dat het Japanners waren. Totaal 1047 mannen heb­ben het niet over­leefd; de overigen bereikten de kust (op vlotten, door zwemmen of door redding met een Japans schip) en werden over­gebracht naar het Cabanatuan-kamp ten noorden van Manila. Onder de geredden bevonden zich 29 Nederlanders.
NOOT. Een deel van de 63 overlevenden werd op 13-12-1944 inge­scheept op de Oryoko Maru 2, maar ook dit schip werd de volgende dag vanuit de lucht aangevallen en tot zinken gebracht.
