Notes about Jacob "Jaap" Knoppers

Jacob Knoppers werkte voor de firma Krol uit Maartensdijk in de bosbouw. 's Morgens vroeg ging hij lopend naar zijn werk. Toen hij eens een fiets won, bleef hij naar Maartensdijk lopen, want hij wilde niet dat zijn baas wist dat hij zoiets luxe als een fiets bezat. Als Jacob zijn zware dagelijks arbeid had voltooid, nam hij de houtspaanders mee naar huis om als brandstof te gebruiken.

Eind december 2003 verkocht de intendant van Paleis Soestdijk, de luitenant-kolonel D. Keuning, in opdracht van het Koninklijk Huis de eeuwenoude boerderij Eyckendal op de hoek Biltseweg / Koningsweg. Daarmee kwam de hofstede, die ooit deel uitmaakte van een bescheiden buitenplaats, na ruim drie eeuwen weer in particuliere handen. De laatste particuliere eigenaar van het pand, dat dateert uit 1640, was de Amsterdammer Johan Hooft, die zijn bezit in 1674 verkocht aan prins Willem III. De prins, die in hetzelfde jaar voor de somma van 18.755 gulden eigenaar was geworden van het jachtslot Soestdijk breidde met de aankoop van Eyckendal zijn bezit uit en bouwde de hofstede om tot woning van zijn jachtmeester.
Op een oude prent is te zien dat het huidige Eyckendal geen enkele overeenkomst vertoont met het jagershuis. Vermoedelijk is de huidige boerderij, die begin jaren negentig door een hevige brand werd getroffen, in oorsprong een bijgebouw van het buiten geweest. De Baarnse geschiedschruijver T. Pluim schrijft in het begin van de vorige eeuw over Eyckendal: "Boven in den zijgevel ziet men een steen, voorstellende een familiewapen, namelijk een menschenhoofd en daaronder anno 1640. We hebben hier met een historischen gevelsteen te doen. Het aangegeven geslachtswapen wordt gevoerd door de patricische familie Hooft, waartoe ook de bekende dichter en geschiedschrijver Pieter Cornz. Hooft behoorde."
Eén van de jagermeesters van Paleis Soestdijk was Jaap Knoppers, wiens vader ook als jachtopziener en jagermeeser de Koninklijke familie vergezelde op de jacht. De familie Knoppers heeft ruim honderd jaar op Eyckendal gewoond. In de negentiende eeuw kon men bij de familie Knoppers terecht voor een drankje in de galagkamer en werden er op de boerderij paarden en koetsen gewisseld. Vanaf 1955 tot november 2001 werd Eyckendal bewoond door de familie Van Duinkerken. Voordat de familie Van Duinkerken in 1935 de boerderij betrok woonde er een aantal jaren de familie Veldhuizen. Deze familie hield kippen in de vroegere gelagkamer. Henk van Duinkerken was de eerste bewoner van Eyckendal met die naam. Hij werd opgevolgd door zijn zoon Gijs van Duinkeren (geb. 1935), die in 2001 vertrok vanwege beëindiging van de pacht. Vanaf de dag dat de boerderij leeg stond, werd om het kraken te voorkomen een huis oppasdienst ingeschakeld. De nieuwe eigenaar van Eyckendal gaat in ieder geval een historisch stukje Soest bewonen.
