Hoogleraar Allard Pierson
Allard Pierson (1831-1896) behoorde tot de vooruitstrevende denkers in de negentiende eeuw. Hij werd geboren in een welvarend Amsterdams gezin en kreeg de kans zich breed te ontwikkelen. Aanvankelijk lag zijn interesse bij theologie. Na zijn studie werd hij predikant in Leuven en later bij de Waalse gemeente in Rotterdam. Allard Pierson had moderne opvattingen over het geloof en zette zich af tegen alles in de Bijbel wat onverklaarbaar was. Nadat hij zich had losgemaakt van de kerk werd hij op uitnodiging hoogleraar theologie aan de universiteit in het Duitse Heidelberg.

Ook als cultuurhistoricus was Allard Pierson wars van vastgeroeste ideeën. Toen de Universiteit van Amsterdam in 1877 officieel werd opgericht, viel de keus op hem voor de functie van hoogleraar kunstgeschiedenis, esthetica en moderne talen. Zo keerde hij terug naar zijn geboortestad. Als gepassioneerd beschouwer van kunst en cultuur in de breedste zin van het woord, was hij een voorbeeld voor vele studenten.

Het Allard Pierson, hét museum en hét kennisinstituut voor de erfgoedcollecties van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, draagt met trots zijn naam.
