Jan Veth was reder van zeilschepen op de grote vaart en eigenaar van een aantal zeilmakerijen. Hiertoe woonde hij in het pand Prins Hendrikkade 123 te Amsterdam van waaruit hij zijn activiteiten bedreef en welk pand later nog door zijn nakomelingen als kantoor werd benut. Hij was mede-oprichter van de Molukse Handelsvennootschap en commanditair vennoot van de firma Gebroeders Veth. In 1884 trok Jan zich terug uit zijn zaken en vestigde zich te Baarn op het voormalige jachthuis van Prins Hendrik. In zijn sociaal leven was hij raadslid van de gemeente Baarn en - als vriend en aanhanger van Abraham Kuijper - stichter van verscheidene Gereformeerde kerken en scholen. Hij overleed op huize ‘Rusthoek’. In 1901 is dit pand door zijn zoons verkocht. Jan en zijn twee echtgenotes liggen in één graf op de oude begraafplaats 'Berkenweg’ te Baarn.

Villa Rusthoek (Kennedylaan 100)
Jan Veth (1833-1899) is reder van zeilschepen op de grote vaart en eigenaar van een aantal zeilmakerijen. Hij is medeoprichter van de Molukse Handelsvennootschap. In 1884 trekt hij zich terug uit zaken en vestigt zich op het voormalige jachthuis van prins Hendrik de Zeevaarder, villa Rusthoek. Zijn zonen verkopen na zijn dood het huis aan ondernemer Willem Jiskoot. Hij is president van de firma Oscar Rohte & Jiskoot en gespecialiseerd in Javatabak. Hij brengt het bedrijf tot grote bloei. In 1902 koopt hij villa Rusthoek. Hij is dan 53 jaar oud en heeft besloten om terug te treden als directeur. Jiskoot besluit in 1905 de villa te laten afbreken en er een nieuw buiten in neo-barokstijl voor in de plaats te laten zetten, nog grootser en monumentaler dan de woning daarvoor. De architecten Schill en Haverkamp tekenen ervoor. Jiskoot woont er tot 1938. Bij zijn overlijden verschijnt het volgende stukje in de Baarnsche Courant: […] een van de laatst overgeblevenen
van die groep Amsterdamse kooplieden die zich aan het eind van de vorige eeuw in Baarn vestigde, hun villa’s liet bouwen en het eenvoudige hoewel deftige dorp een bloeitijdperk brachten, die vooral de industriële en handeldrijvende middenstand veel voordeel gaf. De villa wordt vervolgens gebruikt door de Duitse bezetter en na de oorlog door de Katholieke Volks Partij, Aegon Verzekeringen, Boston Consultancy en momenteel door AT Osborne.
