“Als ik wist waar ik dood ging kwam ik er nooit”, was Jan’s credo. Maar ja hij kwam er toch!!

Hij is als koloniaal naar Indië geweest. Daar had hij een ongelukje gehad, dat er voor zorgde dat hij een scheve neus had. Een plank erop op een boot waar hij mee terug zou komen naar Nederland. Dat was lang onderweg!. Wel zes weken. Het topje van de neus was bewegelijk en viel altijd één kant op.
Dat is één verhaal over het ontstaan van “de neus”!
Een ander verhaal is dat hij die neus te danken had aan een bokswedstrijd.
Hij ging wel eens naar de kerk. Dan had hij een rechte neus. Hij stopte daartoe een vierkant stuivertje in die neus en dan bleef hij recht staan blijkbaar.

Jan hield wel van een borreltje. Een beetje veel soms. Hij leidde het leven van een zwerver, maar vond toch altijd nog wel een primitieve gelegenheid om droog te slapen.

Voor geld ging hij werken bij boer van der Grift op de Torenlaan. Die had daar toen naast vee ook aardappelvelden. Jan verhuurde zich als aardappelrooier. Boer van der Grift kwam maar eens kijken want hij had het gevoel dat Jan niet erg op schoot. En dat was ook zo, want Jan lag te slapen tussen de te rooien aardappels.
Van der Grift: “wordt es wakker, ik betaal je niet om te slapen”.
Nee dat begreep Jan. Zijn vraag was: “wie hebben die aardappels hier eigenlijk gepoot”.
Van der Grift, enigszins verbaasd: “die heb ik gepoot”.
Jan: “ik denk dat je ze er zelf moet uithalen, want jij weet precies waar ze zitten”.
