    Arend bouwde in de twintiger jaren voor hemzelf en zijn ouders een dubbel woonhuis. Later is er één grote woning van gemaakt, waar Arend tot zijn dood heeft gewoond..

    Voorzover bekend was Arend lid van een sport- en van een muziekvereniging. Hij speelde op de cornet. Verder was hij lid van een zangkoor. Zoals zovelen in die tijd kon hij goed schaatsen. Arend was een goede wandelaar (met een takje in zijn mond) en een goede fietser Hi jwas visser en maakte zelf de visnetten. Verder was hij een pijproker. Hij was altijd vrolijk en een levensgenieter. In zijn laatste jaren was hij in het rusthuis Bethesda in Kollum. Hij woonde daar op een kamer met bed. Voor bezoek had hij altijd snoepjes. Hij was erg op zelfstandigheid gesteld Tot op zeer hoge leeftijd is hij goed van gezondheid van lichaam en geest geweest. In de laatste levensjaren had hij staar en in die tijd was een operatie minder gebruikelijk en ook ingrijpender dan nu..
    Na de dood van zijn vrouw Neeltje bleef hij in de woning wonen en had een huishoudster die bij hem in woonde.
