  • Abel Eppens stamt af van een oude boerengeslacht uit de Provincie Groningen. Hij werd als zoon van Eppo Aepkens op dat goed, het Bolhuis bij Equart geboren. Zijn moeder was Etgyn Ellema (ook wel: Elema). Zij stamt af van de net zo bekende Friese familie....
  • In 1562 trouwde Abel Eppens Frouke Louwens. Hij bewoonde het huis naast de boerderij van zijn vader. Een paar jaar later ging hij naar de hoofdboerderij van de familie op het landgoed Bolhuis....
  • Abel Eppens had 8 kinderen, van de twee zonen is meer bekend: "Eppo" en "Louwe Abels", later ook bekend als "Leo Abeli ab Equart". Hij werd in 1595 de eerste gereformeerde pastor in Loppersum - de gemeente waar ook Equart en de famileiboerderij "Bolhuis" zijn. Leo Abeli liet 2 zonen na: "Adolphus Louwens", hij was van 1663-1668 burgemeester van Groningen en "Abelus Leonis" hij was ook predikant in Loppersum en stierf in 1652.
