Andries Schoemaker (1660-1735) is een textielkoopman uit Amsterdam. Zijn grote passie is het verzamelen van historische en topografische informatie over steden en dorpen, kerken en kastelen in Nederland. In de jaren twintig van de achttiende eeuw bezoekt hij bijna alle steden, dorpen en gehuchten in Nederland, vaak samen met zijn zoon Gerrit (1692-1736). Tijdens deze reizen maakt hij beschrijvingen van de plaatsen die hij aandoet en geeft daarvan historische en culturele bijzonderheden.
