John, the son of John Edward Vandenberg Sr. and Bertha Anne Vandenberg of Grand Rapids MI, enlisted in the US Navy on April 27, 1966 in Detroit MI.

Arriving in Vietnam, HM2 Vandenberg was assigned to H&S Company, attached to Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

In the early morning hours a figure was spotted outside the Company I perimeter southwest of Hill 270 and was challenged by a sentry, he did not respond to the challenge and appeared ducking behind some brush. The sentry opened fire at the dark figure, a subsequent search of the area revealed that HM2 Vandenberg, a USN Corpsman had sustained mortal wounds to his head, from the sentry's rifle fire.
