    Op 02-11-1942 werd de MS Zaandam getroffen in de machinekamer aan de bakboord zijde door een torpedo van de U174 op ongeveer 300 mijl ten noorden van Kaap Sao Roque (Brazilië) en is daarna gezonken. 135 van de 299 opvarende kwamen daarbij om het leven waaronder Teunis van Duin 31 jaar en Jan van den Oever 44 jaar.
