    De 13e batterij luchtafweergeschut lag in een villa langs de Vliet. Naast de villa lag een laantje naar een weiland, gelegen achter vliegveld Ypenburg. Hierin stond ongecamoufleerd geschut opgesteld om Ypenburg te verdedigen. Eten werd bezorgd vanuit Restaurant Drievliet. Men lag er al de gehele mobilisatie (1939). Aangezien het eten vanuit Restaurant Drievliet te duur werd, besloot men mijn oom, een neef van mijn vader, Leendert Leroy, er heen te zenden om een houten dubbelwandige keuken naast de villa te maken. Achter de villa lag een grote garage die als slaapvertrek voor de soldaten diende. Jacobus Johannes kwam spontaan naar mijn oom toen hij hoorde dat er een naamgenoot aan het werk was. Zo maakten zij kennis met elkaar.
    De brug over de Vliet werd op 10 mei 1940 bevochten. Er tegenover in een bejaardenhuis hadden de Duitsers hun intrek genomen. De oudjes hadden ze de kelder ingestuurd. Iedereen die zich maar in de omgeving van de brug waagde, werd onder schot genomen. Een sergeant kreeg een kogel in zijn schouder, de kogel kwam er weer uit, veranderde van richting en ging verder, zo door het hoofd van Johannes Jacobus le Roy. De gewonde sergeant vertelde dit verhaal aan mijn oom.
    Wat ik hier verder over hoorde was dat de marechaussee de twee Le Roy's verwisselde en bij mijn tante het treurige nieuws vertelde dat haar man gesneuveld was. U begrijpt, een jonge moeder met 2 kindertjes, was geheel verslagen. Wat nu te doen? Afwachten wat verder ging gebeuren. Aan het eind van de week werd er aan de deur gebeld. Mijn tante opende het luikje en zag haar man staan. Geheel verschrikt liet ze de deur op slot en rende terug de gang in naar de keuken. Of ze een geest had gezien. En oom Leen stond niets vermoedend, bellend aan de deur en begreep er helemaal niets van.
