Tini Suijs
1923 - 1945
Tini wordt geboren op 30 oktober 1923 in Dongen als oudste van de negen kinderen van Martinus Suijs en Antonia van Rooij. Hij werkt als schilder en is tijdens de Duitse bezetting actief in het verzet, hoewel over zijn precieze activiteiten voor de ondergrondse niets bekend is. Mogelijk bestaat zijn verzet uit onttrekking aan de Arbeitseinsatz, de verplichte tewerkstelling in Duitsland. Na verraad wordt hij gearresteerd en afgevoerd naar Duitsland, waar hij wordt binnengebracht in concentratiekamp Neuengamme bij Hamburg.

Onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden wordt Tini daar aan het werk gezet in de baksteenfabriek en de kleiputten. Hij maakt er zeer lange dagen van extreem zwaar werk terwijl hij blootstaat aan allerlei zware mishandelingen door de bewakers. De rantsoenen zijn niet alleen volstrekt ontoereikend, maar ook nauwelijks eetbaar. Met honderden tegelijk worden de gevangenen in barakken ondergebracht, vaak met meerderen op een smerige brits. Onderdak, kleding, hygiëne en medische zorg schieten schromelijk tekort, zodat besmettelijke ziektes snel om zich heen grijpen en tot massale sterfte leiden.

Uiteindelijk worden ook voor Tini de ontberingen te veel. Hij bezwijkt op 16 maart 1945 in Neuengamme aan uitputting, ondervoeding en mishandeling. Tini is 21 jaar geworden.
