Poppo werd op 2 augustus 1603 'in den oorlogh gebooren' en wel in Oostende, waar zijn vader, jonker Johan van Burmania, als kapitein was gelegerd. Zelf nam hij ook dienst in het Staatse leger. Tientallen jaren trok hij als kapitein met zijn troepen rond in de Nederlanden. In 1674 - hij was toen al 71 - wordt hij nog vermeld als luitenant-kolonel en commandant van de lijfgarde van stadhouder Hendrik Casimir II (Prins van Nassau-Dietz). In "Enege gedenckwerdege geschiedenissen" beschrijft Poppo zijn belevenissen en waarnemingen uit de jaren 1622-1674. Als betrokken militair vertelt hij over kruitdampen, belegeringen, heldenmoed, verwondingen, sterfgevallen, wreedheden en militaire tactiek, maar hij vermeldt ook algemene gebeurtenissen zoals besmettelijke ziekten, weersgesteldheden en branden. Veel aandacht besteedt hij aan de vele Oranjes en Nassaus met wie hij in nauw contact stond. Zijn onopgesmukte verhaal brengt de lezer direct in contact met een leven getekend door oorlog.

Op 15 Sep 1674, when he was 71, Poppo wrote to the Prins of Nassau: "Dese compagnijen sijn bij mij":
- One of the 12 was Capitain Osenbrugge.
