Il fut baptisé‚en l'église St-Pierre de Turnhout. Il fut Receveur des droits d'entrée et de sortie de sa Majesté‚à Hoogstraeten. Il fut inhumé‚le 05.01.1743 dans le cimetière de la commune de Hoogstraeten : "Omnibusmunitus obijt Josephus van Engelen, receptor Regiae Majestatis, maritus Capitijns, et5in
cimeteris sepultus est" (Hoogstraeten - Registresparoissiaux). Il prêta serment comme Notaire le 13.05.1727 ( … Westerloo et Hoogstraeten).
Voici le texte de sa requête : "Verthoont met behoorelijke eerbiedinge ende respect Josephus van Engelen, Collecteur der Heeren Staten Rechten ende Procureur residerende binnen der Marquisaede van Westerloo, resorterende onder de Quartieren van Antwerpen, dat hij me eenige jaerenge exerceert hebbende in de practijque, verhopt hem bequaem gemaechkt
te hebben tot de exercitie van t'ampt(?) van Notaris, reden van sijn
recourstot UEdele Seignerie Illustressime, seer oijtmoedelijck biddende de selvegelive gedient te sijn te reputeeren eenen Heer Commissaris
tot de examendes suppliants. Dit doende, etc..." (s) J. van Engelen Le
chancelier de Brabant désigna le Conseiller JAMEZ, … l'effet de procéder à l'examen du Candidat. Le rapport deveexaminateur dit : " Den ondergeschrevenge examineert hebbende Josephue van Engelen hier boven suppliant, ten eijndeom Notaris gecreert te worden, verclart den selven bequaen gevonden te sijnten eijnde voorschreven. Actum tot Brussel den
twaelfsten maij duysend seven hondert seven en twintig." (s) JAMEZ. C'est ainsi que Joseph van ENGELEN fut nommé Notaire et prêta serment entre les mains du Chancelier de Brabant, le 13 mai 1727.
