Notes about Maria Elisabeth Zegers

Overleden ten gevolge van de eerste bombardementen van het Duits leger bij het begin van WW II. Was ter plekke overleden.
De bommen vielen ter hoogte van de Vredestraat en de Nieuwstad in Turnhout.
Haar zoon Augustinus was bij haar op dat ogenblik. Deze is dezelfde dagoverleden aan zijn verwondingen in het ziekenhuis gelegen aan de Warandestraat te Turnhout

Onze generatie zal niet zo vlug het beangstigend ontwaken vergeten, toen de dageraad van 10 mei 1940, onze vreedzame grenzen voor de tweede maal in een kwart eeuw geschonden zag.
10/05/1940
‟s Morgens tussen 5 en 6 uur worden de eerste Duitse vliegtuigen boven Turnhout gehoord. De Duitsers overvallen Nederland. Rond half vijf in de namiddag werpt een Duitse vlieger een aantal bommen af, die ter streken Vredestraat terechtkomen. Resultaat: een 20-tal gekwetsten en vijf dodelijke slachtoffers. De Belgische soldaten blazen de ijzeren brug en de bruggen nrs 1 en 8 op. De slag is voelbaar in de hele stad. Ook de macadamweg te Papenbrugge doet men springen.

In de voornacht van 11 mei grijpt een nieuwe bomaanval plaats. Vooral de randgebieden worden daarbij getroffen: het Stokt, Gierle Steenweg , Kastelein, IJzerenwegstraat en Oude Vaartstraat. Er vallen 10 doden.

De Duitsers vallen Turnhout binnen. Overgave van de stad door het stadsbestuur.
